Project introduction

The stranding of marine mammals has existed in history but, regulations and laws have been established to protect them since 40 years ago in the world. And any harassment, damage and injury, catching or attempting to catch these animals were banned and cash, non-cash charges were determined and pursuant to these rules, Rescue and Assistance groups were established and recording, studying and investigating of their lives and the reasons for their stranding were done and a lot of works have been done to protect these animals in the world so far. In the fiftieth Act of constitution: In the Islamic Republic, today’s generation and the next generation should have a growing social existence for environmental protection. We can see the importance of marine environmental protection in Iran’s constitution as well. According to article 1 of environmental protection and improvement Act, any acts that causes imbalance and asymmetry of the environment and as well as all matters relating to wild animals and freshwater aquatic animals are environmental agency’s duties

Plan for the Land Society commenced a project entitled “National Conservation, Rescue and Assistance Network of marine mammals in stranding time in southern coast of Iran-Persian Gulf and Oman Sea with the aim of educating, sensitizing and protecting marine mammals in four southern provinces of Iran (Khuzestan, Boushehr, Hormozgan, Sistan and Baluchestan) in 2010. This project is going to train local communities, experts and related sea occupations, providing a database of stranding cases, helping to restore marine mammals which are alive and doing scientific research using the most accurate methods and facilities in the coasts and waters of Persian Gulf and Oman Sea and these are taking action to form a National Conservation, Rescue and Assistance Network of marine mammals in stranding time

Overall Objectives

  • Establishing National network of Rescue and Assistance of stranding marine mammals in southern coast of Iran

Detailed Objectives

  • Educating local communities to raise their awareness, sensitization and conservation of marine mammals
  • Providing database of stranding cases
  • Helping to restore marine mammals which are alive
  • Doing scientific research using the most accurate methods and facilities in coasts and waters of Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

Places and methods of project

Iran has four southern provinces in direct contact with Persian Gulf and Oman sea which respectively Sistan and Baluchestan has 318 coastline, Hormozgan 1400km, Bushehr 705km and Khuzestan 300km

Holding several educational workshops to raise public awareness and sensitization about marine mammals and target groups in this educational programs are: Environment experts, fisheries specialists, fishermen, maritime organizations, diving clubs, students and teachers, school administrators. The number of workshops is different according to the importance of geographical location, local population and the number of stranding marine mammals report

Achievement so far

Holding 65 educational workshops and educate 3027 people in four provinces which are Sistan and Bluchestan, Hormozgan, Bushehr and Khuzestan.

Rescuing a common female long-beaked common dolphin in central Khour Jask.

Rescuing a rough-toothed dolphin with the help of fire department and recording the first observation of it.

Rescuing a baby humpback whale by local people in waters around Gheshm Island.

Increasing in the number of records and notifications of stranding marine mammals’ reports in the southern coast of Iran.
