Project introduction

Indian ocean Hump-backed Dolphin (Sousa plumbea) and finless porpoise (Neophocarna phocaenoide) based on the international union for conservation of Natural Red list is among threatened and vulnerable species. They live in warm, shallow coastal waters in Indo-pacific Ocean, Red sea and Persian Gulf. It has been observed in estuaries, creek and forests of Hara. It has been observed or stranded in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Currently, the largest population of this species have been seen in waters around Qeshm island in Hormozgan, Dayr-Nakhiloo national park and Mond protected area in Boushehr province and khour Musa in Khuzestan province

Due to protection of marine mammals and the execution of the National Rescue and Assistance Network project of stranding marine mammal in Iran coast, Plan for the Land society made it necessary and effective to inform and sensitize the local people, fieldwork and sea patrols to identify the exact populations and locations of Humpback dolphin and this association has commenced the study of distribution and conservation of Indo-pacific Humpback dolphin population project in Dayr-Nakhiloo national park and Mond province in 2013

Conservation of Indian- Ocean humpback dolphin in Dayr-Nakhiloo national park and Mond protected area

Detailed Objectives

Distribution of Indian- Ocean humpback dolphin study to obtain exact information of this species presence in the areas

Investigation of Humpback dolphin population in the areas

Awareness and sensitization training for local communities to protect marine mammals

Places and methods of project

Mond protected area is in southeastern of Bushehr province, Bordekhoun district of Dayer

Mond protected area is 32985 hectares and the area of Dayr-Nakhiloo national park is 20436 hectares. Mond protected area in Bushehr province has been under protection since 1976 and the eastern part of the protected area upgraded to Dayr-Nakhiloo national park, Through Act No,296 of Environmental Council( IEC government infrastructure) dated 2007/1/2 . Nakhiloo Island with an area of 60 hectares is an uninhabited island in Persian Gulf which is considered as part of Nakhiloo National park

Beautiful mangrove forests, the dominant species in tidal area give the area specific manifestation. The island of Mond is considered as a perfect place of nesting and breeding seabirds and breeding of beaked turtle. The presence of this species marked as the importance of the region

This project deal monthly with the identification of species (Humpback dolphin) through dorsal fin by using photo-identification. In parallel with identification of the population and the presence of this species, educating fishermen and students have been discussed
